CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA – The “Black Book Awards for Excellence in Black Literature” will be in Charlotte, North Carolina, May 31 through June 2 2008. Black writers are invited to submit their work by April 30 for consideration for “Book of the Year, Best Book of the Year, Carter G. Woodson Award, Best New Writers – Female, Best New Writer of the Year – Male, and Best New Writers of the Year – male and female. To win a category, April 30 is final deadline.
CHOOSING THE BEST OF THE YEAR
Publications may be submitted up to April 30, 2008 for consideration for a 2008 Black Book Awards. All books that are accepted will be evaluated to determine which was “the best” of the ones that we receive by April 30, 2008.
The others will be classified as nominees and will be cited. Submissions are open and free to all Independent Black Writers. The acceptance of submissions is free and is based whether or not the literature is excellent, viable and relevant to the National Black Community.
All who register to attend will be afforded an opportunity to have their work showcased in the “gallery of independent Black books.” They will be given two opportunities during the weekend to share their experiences as a guest speaker. They will also be given the opportunity to autograph and sell copies of their publication. And keep all proceeds from the sale.
The featured event of the weekend will be the presentation of the annual “Carter G. Woodson Award” to the person who contributed the most to the ‘re-education of the negro.” The presentation to winners in each category will be presented at a gala dinner, followed by a Guest Speaker.
Past Carter G. Woodson recipients have included Dr. Na’im Akbar, Dr. Imari I. Obadele, Dr. Henry N. Anderson, Sister Shahrazad Ali, Dr. Omar Reid and some 12 others who have made a significant contribution to the education necessary for Black people to overcome the aftermath of chattel slavery, second-class citizenship and other forms of oppression.
The programs is by presented by UBUS Communications Systems. It is co-sponsored by Civilized Publications; Conquering Books, Your Black Books Guide (ybbg#).
