Book Review........................................ RACE & THE
NAMING OF THE WHITE HOUSE - A TIMELY BOOK REVIEW SYSTEMS in 1992.
It was written by a young graduate scholar, David L. Hancock, a
student at the University of Wisconsin. With the USA having to
decide whether to vote for a Black Candidate, Barack Obama, or a
White Candidate, John McCain, this is a timely book. The research
is astounding, as all research must be, when the white institutions
give their highest degree to a Black Student. This book is a must
read for black people. Not only does it give the history of why the
house name was changed from “President’s House” to “White House” –
in order the do the job correctly, the condition of Black people
during the periods is told. Mr. Hancock says: “My research will
show that the use of the term, the White House, was a statement of
natural purpose, an expression of national identity. It told whites
about the direction of American social and political life, where
they stood, and their identity as Americans. “For Blacks and other
nonwhites,” he continues, “the term, the White House stood as a
symbolic barrier whose intent was to keep them outside of the
American mainstream. It aimed to prevent Blacks and other
non-whites from becoming “civilized,” from ascending to the level
of whites, and from claiming equality with them.”
