THE 18TH ANNUAL BLACK BOOK AWARDS IS HISTORY:
THE 19TH IS THE FIRST WEEKEND OF JUNE, 2010
A near capacity gathering of several dozen of the finest minds in the Black race were part of the historic 18th Black Book Awards, the weekend of June 5, 6 & 7, 2009 at Khalifah Estates, in Southampton County, Virginia.
They answered the call of H. Khalif Khalifah to meet and participate in a now institutional process where thousands of literary produces that is written by, for or about Black people have been “validated and celebrated” by their Own. The time honored event also identifies and recognizes the service of Black scholars, whose work is essential to the healing of a great, freedom bound people.
The attendees were characterized in two distinct ways: #1. the mass majority were young Black Men, many in their 30’s whose scholarship and leadership was self-evident in their work or in the messages they delivered to the attentive audience. And #2. The commitment of all to the total liberation of Black people.
After a day lone presentation of “mini-workshop,” to discuss self and their work and experiences, the following 2009 Black Book Awards were presented in the evening:
1. King Dhakir –BEST NEW WRITER-MALE: “I Hate My Job.”
2. Nadirah U. Khalifah – BEST NEW WRITER-FEMALE: “The Faard Fyle: Memories of my Mother.”
3. Rock Muhammad – BOOK OF THE YEAR – “The Tree of Life.”
SERVICE AWARDS ALSO PRESENTED
Service awards were also presented to the following:
1. Sister Salaam Jaha – “Forging Ahead For the Benefit of Others
2.The Nat Turner Freedom Award – presented to Dr. Muyiah Kambon
3. The Carter G. Woodson Award – Presented to Educator Julian Shabazz
4. Nia Page – UBUS Black Youth Award
5. Amenseth & Mxlolisi Sowell – Lumumba Odinga African Unity Award
6. Heather Lee – Lumumba Odinga African Unity Award
The Black Book Awards have been presented annually during the first weekend of June since 1991 (except for 2004). The last day was given to the business, a lecture on Glorious Light Meditation by Soshen Amuntyt Khalifah, and Khalifah conducted two “Return Visits to the Nat Turner Trail.”
